By the time, we reach adulthood most of us will have experienced more than one life-changing event, from our first kiss, to being dumped for an alternative suitor, from passing our exams to failing our driving test etc.
For many of us life-changing events come out of nowhere, either taking us on new voyages of discovery or down dark avenues of introspection or even low depressive periods. The following quote attributed to Robert Balzar expresses this nicely

Many of us, at one or more times, in our lives will be knocked off course by life changing events. Often, it is not the events that are a surprise that hit us the hardest.
When a close family member, friend or a devoted pet pass way we can often find ourselves filled with emotions that are so strong, so overwhelming, we find ourselves physically unable to cope. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the passing followed a short or long period of illness. Likewise, if we find ourselves (or one of our family) afflicted with an illness or disability, the effects can dramatically change our view of the world.
We should also remember that above all things we are all unique individuals moulded by our life experience and to some extent the varying degrees of intimacy and support we have had in the past from family, partners and friends. We are also very different personalities; some people cope well on the surface but have problems down the road, where others may find themselves in a tangle of feelings and emotion that seem impossible to escape. Time is of course a great healer, but if we find ourselves, stick in one place unable to move on therapy is often great help.
