For most people confidence is something that grows throughout life. As we gain greater life experience and expertise, so our self-confidence builds. For many people the definition of low confidence would indeed be a picture of themselves when young.
Loss of Confidence and Confidence Building
Suffering a loss of confidence can affect virtually anybody, whether through relationship problems, redundancy/unemployment, ill health or not being as young and vital as we once were. The effects can be crippling and they are generally made worse by very high levels of anxiety.
As you may have seen in the anxiety section, there can be a cumulative drip, drip, drip effect, which eventually can feel overwhelming.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be very helpful for people suffering with a loss of confidence. Unlike traditional talking therapies, we do not need to discuss the reasons for the negative feelings you may be experiencing, in fact, we know that dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings can make us feel worse.
From the first session we will work together to find solutions to the issues, we know that if we think, act and interact in a positive way we are able to harness the power of the brain. In life, we often have to remind ourselves of the vast untapped resources we have at our disposal, resources we have all gathered through our life experience.
The latest thinking in neuroscience suggests that the skills and expertise we have in a particular area of life are never actually lost. We should think of the neurons making strong connections in areas where we have current needs or interest as well trodden pathways, that are easy to follow.
If, however we stop using a skill or no longer use a particular area of expertise, it is like the path gradually becomes overgrown, through lack of use. The great thing is we can use hypnotherapy to rediscover these paths and reopen the way to these resources. We can even use visualisation and self-hypnosis to build new connections. This can be particularly helpful if we need to make a big speech or attend a meeting/interview, as we can build confidence in advance of the event.
We are able to work quickly and we would expect to see most people to have made significant improvement after only 8 to 12 sessions. However, for most people the speed at which we can work also depends on the commitment of the client to the process.
Confidence building can of course be general, in the sense that greater confidence is perceived as a benefit, or it could be related to one particular area in life in which we feel that we have little or no confidence. Similar to loss of confidence we must first tackle any anxiety around the issue at hand, as well as any other related issues.
Once again, we do not have to spend a lot of time discussing the specific issue (or problems), we concentrate on the solutions. Hypnosis (trance) can be very helpful to focus our minds so that we can work towards achieving our goals and objectives. We are able to work quickly and we would expect to see most people to have made real improvement after only 8 to 12 sessions. However, for most people the speed at which we can work also depends on the commitment of the client to the process.
