What is anxiety and how can solution focused hypnotherapy help?
If you search online for 'definition of anxiety' the first one that pops up is Anxiety, noun " A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome".
In reality for most people anxiety builds over time, think of a bathtub slowly filling up with water because a faulty tap is drip, drip dripping. In this way most of us don't realise that anxiety is becoming a problem until we start showing symptoms such as irritability or difficulty thinking straight. We often have problems getting to sleep and sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, our minds awash with the 'problems' of the day.
If left unchecked anxiety can also lead to physical symptoms such as breathlessness and chest pain. This can also lead to panic attacks, particularly as breathless and chest pain are also associated with angina or heart attacks!
Solution focused hypnotherapy can help by firstly explaining how we can suffer from anxiety and in effect once we know how to fix the tap we can get on and do it. Secondly through improving sleep patterns we are able to help our clients reduce anxiety levels, a bit like reducing the water in the bath. Thirdly we can also help our clients identify the solutions to the problems that caused the build up of anxiety in the first place.
To leave the bath analogy to one side, we find that once people understand how to find solutions and implement them, they have the power to keep anxiety to normal levels. Using techniques pioneered in Solution Focused Brief Therapy, along with hypnosis (trance), we are able to work quickly and would expect most people to have made significant improvement after only 8 to 12 sessions. However for most people the speed at which we can work also depends on the commitment of the client to the process.
